College Credit

College CreditSuccessful completion of American Legion Boys State of Missouri qualifies a citizen to apply for two (2) or three (3) hours of college credit from University of Central Missouri.

Qualified citizens will be contacted by the University of Central Missouri in the Fall following their participation in the program. Each qualified citizen should receive a letter, as well as multiple emails and texts explaining the application process and deadlines to sign-up for these credits. Deadlines will be strictly enforced.

Every citizen who attends Missouri Boys State is eligible to apply for scholarships available from more than 30 colleges and universities that total more than $2 million dollars.


The Harley Wyatt Memorial Scholarship Program


Participants who successfully complete The American Legion Missouri Boys State program in its entirety and finish in good standing will be eligible to apply for the following scholarship opportunities:

Citizen of the Week
1 at $20,000

During the 2021 session of Boys State, a "Citizen of the Week" will be selected to receive the 40/8 Kickapoo Voiture Locale 760 Wayne Gregory Memorial Scholarship of $5,000 per year for up to 4 years. The scholoarship will cover costs and fees, payable to a college or university of the recipient’s choice. Must meet requirements as published by the MBS Memorial Trust, including a 3.0 GPA, and return as a staff member of Boys State annually. One-time scholarships will also be awarded to the first alternate ($5,000), second alternate ($2,500), and five other recipients ($1,000).



Governor's Scholarship
1 at $750

The citizen elected as the Missouri Boys State Governor is eligible to receive a $750 scholarship from The American Legion Scholarship Committee, payable to a College or University of the recipient’s choice. Must meet requirements including returning the following year as a staff member and successfully performing his executive duties as Governor.



Man in the Arena/Vogel Family Scholarship
1 up to maximum total of $100,000

This full-ride scholarship of up to $25,000 per year with a maximum four year total of $100,000 will be awarded to one Missouri Boys State citizen. This scholarship, named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt’s inspiring “Citizen in a Republic” speech which was a call to citizens to engage in public service will be awarded based on need and merit of the applicant. Winner will be selected by a Committee and announced during the closing ceremonies the final Saturday of Missouri Boys State. Samsung American Legion Scholarship
1 up to $10,000

Each participant who successfully completes the 2021 session of Missouri Boys State and meets the scholarship criteria is eligible to apply for the Samsung/American Legion Scholarship. Applicant must be a direct descendant (i.e., son, grandson, great-grandson) of a U.S. veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war indicated on the application. Documentation showing the veteran served on active duty during eligibility period(s) is required. Accepted forms of documentation are listed here.

Deadline:  11:59 p.m., June 12, 2021.

One Departmentl Finalist will be selected from the applications received from participants of Missouri Boys State. The Missouri Department Finalist will then compete against nearly 100 Department Finalists selected from other Boys State and Girls State programs.

The scholarship awards for 2021 as set by the National Committee are: 10 National Scholarships of $10,000 each and 10 National Runners-Up Scholarships of $5,000 each. The remaining Department Finalists will each receive a $1,250 scholarship.

As a student demonstrating leadership and character, students who have participated in the Missouri Boys State Program meet these criteria for academic scholarship consideration. Students must be admitted as full-time degree seeking students at the College of Arts and Sciences in Baldwin City, KS before scholarship consideration. The academic scholarship amounts vary based on academic profile of the student.

First 100 at $30,000 (total value over eight semesters) - Renewable

Central Christian College of the Bible will award a Full Tuition Scholarship to the first 100 qualified incoming freshmen who have demonstrated leadership experience at Missouri Boys State and meet admission criteria. The total amount of Missouri Boys State scholarships provided is equal to $3,000,000 in student scholarships.

The scholarship is renewable, up to four years, for recipients maintaining scholarship requirements including full-time status and a “C” average. Scholarships also available for part-time students.

Central Methodist University offers a Civic Engagement Award. Service is a distinguishing feature of the Central Methodist University education. The Civic Engagement program brings together mission and action, as students learn to lead through service. Students who have a passion for engaging their communities, wish to have opportunities for leadership in serving, and want to belong to a group of excited and engaged individuals are welcome to apply for this opportunity. As members of the Civic Engagement program, students will be eligible to receive a scholarship award of $2,500 each academic year and will be provided leadership opportunities through the Office of Civic Engagement via developing service projects on and off campus. Missouri Baptist University, in recognition of outstanding achievements of students completing the Missouri Boys State program, will award five scholarships valued at $1,500 each per academic year. Missouri Southern State University

The Missouri Boys State Scholarship is $800 per academic year ($400 per Fall/Spring Semester) and requires a 26 or higher ACT score. It is renewable for a total of 8 consecutive Fall/Spring Semesters if the renewal criteria are met. To be renewed, a student must enroll in at least 12 credit hours/semester at MSSU and complete at least 24 credit hours per year at MSSU with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The scholarship must be used within one year after high school graduation, will be applied toward student tuition, and can be combined with other academic scholarships such as Honors, Presidential, or A+. Each applicant needs to submit a FAFSA or birth certificate and provide a copy of his Boys State certificate to the MSSU Financial Aid Office.

Missouri State University will offer up to 5 awards of $1,000 each year to entering freshmen who participated in Boys State. To be chosen for this competitive award, students must have both a solid academic record and a strong record of leadership. This award is non-renewable. It can be combined with other Missouri State awards and scholarships with the exception of the Presidential, University, Governors, and Inclusive Excellence Leadership scholarships. Students must apply for admission, submit the MSU Boys State Scholarship Application, and provide verification of Boys State attendance to the Office of Student Financial Aid by March 1 of their senior year. Accepted applicants who participated in the 2021 session of Missouri Boys State and will be entering freshmen in the Fall 2022 Class are eligible to be considered on a competitive basis for twenty $1,000 Boys State Scholarships. A separate scholarship application is not required, but students should indicate participation on their admission application and provide a detailed resume/activities list that includes Boys State and other significant involvement, leadership, and service. The awards are renewable according to the scholarship renewal requirements provided at the time the offer is extended to the student.

Consideration for UMKC Achievement Scholarships is given to Boys State citizens who demonstrate outstanding academic ability. The Achievement awards are renewable for up to 5 years of undergraduate study with a 2.75 cumulative grade point average. Not available to medicine, conservatory or pharmacy students. Consideration is automatically given to students who are admitted to an eligible undergraduate degree program by February 1, 2022.
