
STERLING PRICE
(1809 - 1867)
Missouri State Governor
Born Sept. 11, 1809, in Prince Edward County Virginia,
Price moved after 22 years to Fayette, Missouri. In 1836, he was elected
Chariton County Representative to the General Assembly. In 1844, he
was elected Democratic Representative to Congress, but resigned in
1846 to accept a Colonel's Commission during the Mexican War. Soon
after he was appointed to the Rank of Brigadier General. In 1852,
he was an anti-Benton candidate for Governor and won by a large margin.
As Major General of the newly organized State Guard, Price's Army
fought under the Confederacy.
