NANNEY NAMED NATIONAL FINALIST FOR SAMSUNG
SCHOLARSHIP
(Warrensburg, MO) - Adam J. Nanney of Festus, MO
was selected as one of 100 national finalists for the Samsung American
Legion National Scholarship. Nanney was selected from among over
110 applications by the state scholarship committee of the Missouri
American Legion at their meeting in mid-July. By virtue of his selection
Nanney is awarded a $1000 scholarship and will now compete nationally
this fall for one of seven scholarships expected to total approximately
$20,000 each.
Nanney was selected based on his school and community
involvement, academic standing, and leadership skills. Nanney will
be a senior at Festus R-6 High School this fall and currently intends
to pursue a higher education degree in an area of study concerning
the environment. He is the son of James and Joette Nanney.
Eligible applicants attended The American Legion
Boys State of Missouri, Inc. in Warrensburg this past June and were
descendants of war veterans. Boys State is a leadership and citizenship
training program sponsored by the Missouri American Legion.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds
come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung.
Samsung, in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of United
States servicemen and women who served during the Korean War to
maintain the security of the Korean peninsula, joined with The American
Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of
war-time veterans who have served honorably.
The winners of the ten national scholarships are
expected to be announced in mid-October by the National Samsung
American Legion Scholarship Committee. 2003 marks the eighth year
for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship program.
