At Thursday night’s General Assembly, the Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan brought a close to the Missouri Boys State elections by inducting the new state officers. Secretary Carnahan’s speech was supportive and stressed the importance of community service.

“We can make [the world] a better place,” said Carnahan.

Carnahan, herself a former Missouri Girls State citizen, provided comfort and a relatable story for many when she informed the audience that she had ran for state treasurer during her year at MGS.
“I hope that at least a few of you will have your interest piqued about public service,” Carnahan said.

Carnahan shared an inspirational story of a plane crash at the Hump of Burma, where the members of the crash slowly worked their way to the nearest American army base, 300 miles away.

“The goal that we seek, you don’t always get there in one step,” said Carnahan, pointing out the moral of the survivors’ journey. “It takes effort.”

Robin Carnahan is also an advocate for the right to vote, and wants young people to take advantage of the freedoms that we have.

“My focus is to get the folks registered to vote,” she said.

When asked what she thought of potentially running against Roy Blunt in the 2010 Senatorial election, she said that she admired his “long record of public service” and that she would “look forward to a vigorous debate.”

Missouri Secretary of State Carnahan is a native of Rolla, Missouri, where she grew up on a 900-acre farm. Carnahan believes that her childhood, family, and hometown have prepared her for her life now.

“Being out on the farm I think is good training for public service,” she said.

MBS is a gathering of people thought to be leaders by their school or community. MBS officers are those thought to be leaders by leaders.

MBS has seen many great minds emerge through the rigorous campaigning process, and a congratulations is in order for each, but only a select few were able to appeal to a majority of citizens to get voted into state office.

Robin Carnahan, Missouri Secretary of State, swore the MBS citizens into their positions last night officially allowing the next generation of Boys Staters to take charge. Federalists, Tim Williams and Kenneth Fox, were voted governor and Lt. Governor Supreme Courtrespectively. They are helped by fellow Federalist Andrew Winley as their Treasurer. Nationalist support comes from, Auditor Nathaniel Duker, Attorney General, Jackson Hobbs, and Secretary of State, Brook Bounous.

Most officials rode to office on the promise to make the 70th session of Missouri Boys State one to remember. Already, they have changed this session, but next year, will reveal if they can change the history of MBS.
