 Throughout Boys State's week to shape a lifetime, citizens have
a variety of opportunities to utilize their talents, experience
new activities, and showcase good leadership. One of these many
opportunities include Boys State athletics. Boys State citizens
participate in a number of athletics including basketball, softball,
volleyball, swimming, badminton, horseshoes, tennis, and racquetball.
Scores are tallied throughout the week and later count towards Model
City scoring.

Sports are a Game of Thought

Sports are not only a way for
citizens to exert themselves
physically but also a chance to
mentally exercise. This is especially
true here at MBS, where
delegates are not only extremely
intelligent but also excellent
athletes. Some of the greatest
athletes of all time understood
the importance of using their
minds while playing. Yogi
Berra once famously quoted
that “baseball is ninety percent
mental.” As a long-time Yankee,
Yogi understood how important
using his brain was while
competing.
There is an outstanding athlete
at MBS that understands the
same concept. Carnahan citizen
Colby Teeman is an excellent
football, basketball, and track
athlete in his hometown of
Butler and is also a member of
National Honor Society, quiz
bowl, and is student council
vice president.
Colby plans on participating
in softball, bowling, and Frisbee
golf during his stay at MBS.
“Focusing as much as possible
on winning” is Colby’s advice
to fellow athletes. He also
states that “winning is the most
important thing, because when
you are winning you are always
having fun.”
